Ter Wille van Talita by Helena Hugo

This story by Helena Hugo tells the story of the Van den Heever family, who live on the West Coast near Lamberts Bay. They keep to themselves, but come under the spotlight when Theuns van den Heever refuses to allow his daughters to take part in a Christmas play. It appears that he rules his wife and children with an iron hand.

Theuns is a strict believer who wants to protect his daughters from bad influences and emotional pain, unaware that he takes this too far and deprives his wife and daughters of the opportunity to grow and develop.

The title is taken from Mark 5:41, where Jesus says to the little girl, “Talitha, arise!” It is used symbolically as an image of a child’s awakening, as well as a visible sign of a child coming of age and having to establish her own identity, separate from the protection of her parents. In a sense, she must rise up and learn to stand on her own.
